Comprehensive Coordinated Early Intervening Services (CCEIS) is a federally mandated initiative designed to address the disproportionate identification, placement, and discipline of students, particularly those from marginalized communities, in special education. The program focuses on providing early intervention and support for students who may be at risk of academic failure or behavioral issues, with the goal of preventing these students from being unnecessarily placed in special education or facing disciplinary actions that could impede their educational success. CCEIS works by offering targeted interventions, academic support, and mentorship to ensure that students receive the help they need before more severe measures are taken, thereby promoting educational equity and reducing systemic barriers.
For the past two months, the dedicated mentors of Walk With Me Impact have been working tirelessly with Comprehensive Coordinated Early Intervening Services (CCEIS) students across two middle schools and two high schools. These students, often labeled as at-risk, face significant struggles in their day-to-day lives, from gang violence and substance abuse to navigating the complexities of building healthy relationships. The Walk With Me team, composed of mentors who bring firsthand, lived experience to the table, understands these struggles because, in many ways, they were once these students.
Our mentors, having grown up in similar environments, know the obstacles these young people face—whether it’s the allure of gang involvement, the pressures of substance abuse, or the challenge of making positive choices when surrounded by negative influences. This shared history has allowed our team to quickly build trust with the mentees, establishing deep connections in a short time. Trust between the students and the mentors grew organically and firmly, as the mentees recognized they were learning from individuals who genuinely understood their lives.
One of the most telling signs of our impact is that students began bringing more and more of their friends to the group sessions. These young people found a safe space where they could talk openly about the challenges they face and receive real, actionable advice. The Walk With Me Impact curriculum played a crucial role in facilitating these meaningful conversations, providing mentors with the structure and resources needed to dive deep into topics that matter most. From strategies for avoiding gang involvement to navigating the pressures of substance use, the curriculum ensured that each session was impactful and transformative.
